Please note that many of these terms have expanded definitions and articles with pictures that you can reach from our web site home page with a click.

“HOLDER NUMBER”  -  number is preceded by first initial of TPG (i.e., “P” for PCGS).

“DIVA SERIAL NUMBER”  -  each Ike Group Attributer has his own cumulative numbers,  preceded by his first and

last initial (RE 002would be Rob Ezerman’s second Attribution Report).

DIVA IKE CATALOG SYSTEM  -  simple and intuitive once you use it a couple of times:

1.        First, the DATE .  Then CB, SB, SP or CP:  C = CuNi-clad, S = Silver.  B = Business Strike, P = Proof.

2.       Next, if a Design Variety, “DV”:  if a Variety, nothing:  if die state, “ds”.

3.       Last is the descriptive name of the DIVA.  Thus, “71-S SB DV STRAIGHT PEG LEG (SPL)”.

“NE”, “L” and “M” stands for Naked Eye,  Loupe (10X) and Microscope:  when more than one is circled, the

second circle generally stands for “confirmed by”, thus, if “NE” and “L” are both circled, the DIVA was

identified by naked eye and confirmed via a 10X loupe.

“ds” (die state) indicates the die was altered while in use.  Most common cause was die abrading used to

remove die-clash images (accounting for all CB peg leg Ikes (except ’76 T1’s), for example.

“Peg Leg” refers to Design Varieties and die-state die-clashed, die-abraded Ikes where the left leg of the “R” of

“LIBERTY” lacks pointed lateral extensions off the foot (“serifs”).  The peg leg can resemble a tree-trunk, an Eskimo boot or be roughly rectangular (“Straight”).  It can show various degrees of fade.

“Die-Clash Images” are due to the opposing dies damaging each other when they “clash” due to a

planchet not being fed into the chamber (usually due to a jammed feeder finger).  The Denver Mint die

setters  “repaired” most clashed dies using various tools and abrasives to remove as much of the clash

images as practical.  The Philly Mint threw out most of its clashed dies.  The six major clash images:

TALON HEAD –  image on Ike’s temple due to a rounded nubbin on the reverse die (between the Eagle’s legs).

HAIR LIP – thin upward curving line off lower lip (unless dies rotated), from Eagle’s right wing.

UPSIDE DOWN U – next to E of WE, from U of UNUM on reverse:  least common image and usually partial.

MOON LINE – curved line on moon from top of Ike’s head:  often least abraded image as not on field.

JAW LINE – curved lines south and east of Earth:  from, go figure, Ike’s jaw.  Usually abraded heavily.

VOLUNTEER – straight short line southeast from under bust at F of FG:  from Eagle’s left wing.  Uncommon.

EYE CLASH  -  iris loses details plus small image in crook of Eagle’s right wing.

IKE GROUP DIE CLASH GRADING SYSTEM:

Grade A  -  jumps off the coin, crisp, sharp, essentially complete

Grade B – visible at most angles and at least mid-sized

Grade C – barely visible at just the right angle or tiny

      SOME SPECIFIC DIVA’S:

FEV  =  1971-D Friendly Eagle Variety, probably the initial low relief Ike reverse design, a very different Ike.

TC    =  1971-D Tiger Claw,  one-die variety with several groves cut at “WE” from a skipping abrasion wheel.

SPL  =  Straight Peg Leg by design, usually fatter and fuller than the Fading Peg Leg (FPL).

FPL  =  Fading Peg Leg by design, middle and end of the left leg of the R of LIBERTY more or less fades into field.

PROTOTYPE  =  1971-S unique “stem cell” early Ike with both proof and BS features:  only one specimen known.

fpl   =  die-state fading peg leg due to die abrasion (CuNi-clad Ikes) or die polish (proof Ikes).

PPL  =  1971-S Partial Peg Leg Variety, proofs struck with partially hubbed obverse working dies, all obverse

devices in low relief, “O” of “GOD doesn’t close, mintage possibly as low as 10-20K.

TYPE 2, MARCH and AUGUST releases  =  two separate populations of 1972 (P) CB TYPE 2 Ikes:  80% of March

release have die crack in  STATES, 50% of August release are clashed with a small ”Talon Tip” and

abraded Jaw Line:  both are one die-pair Ikes, March pop ~ 30K, August pop ~ 200K.

TYPE 2, UNDEFINED  -  with neither die crack nor clash, these ~100K  T-2’s could be March or August releases.  We’re looking for other markers for the either or both T2’s so we can identify them in the absence of die crack and die clash.  Any input would be great!

SHADOW IKE =  likely the 72-S SB original design, shallow incuse crescent hugs Earth at 10:30  -  about 30%                 of  all 72-S  SB Ikes.   Also present on all 1972 CB TYPE 2 Ikes.  EDS shows image at bottom of crescent!

NO-SHADOW 1972-S SB ds IKE  =  the shadow is probably erased with die re-frosting treatment, hence a die

state Ike  -  about 65% of all 1972-S SB Ikes.

EBPL  =  1974-S CP and SP Eskimo Boot Peg Leg, looks like an Eskimo Boot, beautiful Design Variety: rare in CuNi-

clad and very rare in Silver-clad.  Die-abrasion (ds) 74-S proof peg legs (SB and CB) not as elegant.
